Nokia unveils a host of low-cost 4K Android TVs

  • Nokia is launching a range of affordable Android TVs, most of which offer 4K and HDR.
  • A set-top box for Android TV will also be introduced.
  • The lineup focuses on Europe.

You don’t have to pay a lot if you’re looking for a modern Android TV – at least if you live in the right part of the world. Nokia (or rather branded licensee Streamview) is launching a wide variety of Android TVs that are affordable and have benefits like 4K and HDR.

The core of the line goes from the 43-inch 4300A to the 75-inch 7500A (you can see the 55-inch 5500A above). All of these Nokia branded LCD TVs have 4K, HDR (with HDR10) and a remote control with push-to-talk for Google Assistant. There is also talk of “interoperability” with Nokia phones, although this is really indicative of the Google ecosystem. Other Android phones should work fine.

Connected: The best Android TV boxes you can get

You won’t find luxuries like high refresh rates (they stop at 60 Hz) and the devices run Android 9. You get micro-dimming LEDs, four HDMI outputs and potentially game-friendly response times of no more than 9.5 ms. A 1080p model, the 32-inch 3200A, has HDR and three HDMI outputs for those who just want a small, no-frills TV.

Nokia offers the ability to stream Android TV to virtually any device. The Streaming Box 8000 (see image below) is a straightforward Android 10 media hub with 4K playback and a remote control suitable for the Google Assistant with shortcuts for popular services such as Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, Netflix and YouTube.

We’re still waiting for pricing as we write this. Hence, it is not certain how affordable the Nokia Android TVs will be. However, Nokia understands that even the 4K televisions are budget models. The Streaming Box 8000 is expected to cost 99 euros. Don’t expect to find this hardware around the world – the 8000 will only be available in Europe, and we wouldn’t be surprised if Android TVs were mainly sold in the continent.
