Nissan teases its new Ariya electric crossover, announces July debut date
We were pretty sure that Nissan cooked an electric SUV based on that Ariya concept from the Tokyo Motor Show 2019 for some time. We even saw leaked patent drawings, but what we didn’t have was Nissan’s confirmation that it was real or when it could debut.
That changed on Wednesday when the Japanese automaker announced that the production version of the Ariya would be released in July. What else do we know about it? Pretty much nothing, but given the state of Nissan’s finances At the moment we can make some assumptions.
We bet the Ariya will offer a slightly hotter version of the Ariya Leaf Plus’ Powertrain, probably with a slightly shorter range due to the poorer aerodynamics of a crossover. There will also likely be Nissan’s newest and largest iteration of its ProPilot suite (which ones we liked in the past) and finally his new “shield grille” is likely to be the face of future Nissan electric vehicles.
We would also strongly suspect that much depends on the success of this electric vehicle for the troubled automaker. Given the public’s appetite for crossovers, the Leaf’s success as an affordable electric vehicle, and the generally good design of newly revised models like the Rogue, Nissan has at least a chance.
Nissan did not immediately respond to Roadshow’s request for comment.
