Nintendo’s OLED ‘Switch Pro’ name-dropped by a display exec

  • A display manager has claimed Nintendo selected an OLED screen for an upcoming Switch Pro.
  • It would confirm previous rumors.
  • However, Nintendo has not confirmed anything.

Rumors of an updated switch have just been supported by an unexpected source: the display industry. James Fimognari, Spawn wave and SlashGear Steven Abramson, CEO of Universal Display Corporation, claimed during a call to win that Nintendo chose an OLED display for the “new Switch Pro” because it offers a virtually infinite contrast ratio and faster pixel response times.

It’s not sure how much inside-title Abramson has in the news for Nintendo’s new console. He mentioned the Switch Pro as part of a description of a burgeoning market for OLED devices that included Dell’s latest XPS 13 and Samsung’s Galaxy Book Pro family. The executive referred to “reports” rather than confirming direct knowledge. Still, it’s an unusual claim made when discussing financial results – especially by a CEO with a vested interest in OLED technology.

It may refer to an earlier one Bloomberg Rumor. In the sources of the publication, Nintendo gave the expanded Switch a 7-inch OLED panel (from a 6.2-inch LCD) made by Samsung. Other rumors suggest that the new system would use a new Nvidia chipset which, when connected to a TV, would be the key to 4K gameplay. The new hardware would use Nvidia’s DLSS to scale 1080p games to the higher resolution.

Nintendo has not confirmed an OLED switch, and there are no guarantees that it will arrive before the end of 2021, if any. Abramson’s comments, however, are sure to raise expectations. Also, it wouldn’t be surprising if a new machine came out soon to keep the Switch relevant at a time when PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are making 4K games relatively commonplace.
