There are no new or active cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Monday. The nation has had just over 1,500 Corona virus Cases and 22 deaths in total. But for the first time since February there are no more active cases. Ardern said it was “a long way to go”, but New Zealand is lifting most of its COVID-19 restrictions.
“We are confident that we have eliminated the transmission of the virus in New Zealand,” said Ardern on Monday. “But the elimination is not a time, but a sustained effort.”
New Zealand’s borders remain closed, except for citizens and residents. All newcomers to the nation must be quarantined for two weeks. Other COVID-19 restrictions have now been lifted.
The last new case was reported 17 days ago. In total, around 300,000 people were tested in New Zealand. The nation has a population of almost 5 million. In comparison, the U.S. is the world leader with nearly 2 million cases and more than 110,000 COVID-19 deaths. This comes from figures from John Hopkins University and Medicine.
