New Snapdragon 800 chip coming, could be in Motorola Edge S
- Qualcomm is reportedly preparing a new flagship Snapdragon 800 series chipset.
- It is believed that the Motorola Edge S will be the first to offer the SoC.
We mumbled last year that a Snapdragon 800 Lite processor was in the works, but Qualcomm only announced the Snapdragon 888. Now a well-known leaker has suggested that another Snapdragon 800 series chip will actually come.
Weibo Tipster’s Digital Chat Station reported that “a new flagship 8-series chip” is in the works, although the leaker did not reveal any details regarding the technical specifications or availability of the chipset.
Even so, Motorola recently confirmed on Weibo that the Motorola Edge S is in preparation, and the aforementioned tipster reported that the phone will be the first to offer the new processor.

It is far too early for Qualcomm to introduce a Snapdragon 888 Plus processor as this option is usually offered in the middle or second half of the year. We heard rumors last year that Qualcomm was working on a lite version of its flagship 2021 processor. So we’re guessing a new Snapdragon 800-series chip would land under the Snapdragon 888 in terms of capabilities at this point.

We’ve already mentioned several reasons to look forward to a Snapdragon 888 Lite processor, and one of the main reasons might just be the pricing. A lite chipset could potentially save a few dollars off a smartphone’s entire bill of materials and in theory allow brands to pass the savings on to consumers. A lite chip could also bridge a gap between the Snapdragon 800 series and the Snapdragon 700 family, offering a better GPU and other features.
There’s no word on a launch date for the Motorola Edge S, but when a new Snapdragon 800 series chipset comes out and Motorola has its first dibs on it, we should hear more at the launch event.
