TL; DR

  • According to a recent FCC list, Fossil is apparently working on a new portable device.
  • The device appears to be more of a hybrid watch than a new smartwatch.
  • It offers 5 ATM water resistance and Bluetooth.

A new Fossil smartwatch has surprisingly surfaced at the FCC, suggesting the company has a new wearable device on the way. However, it may not be a smartwatch at all.

The product in question has the model number UK7-NDW5. The listing confirms that it has 5 ATM water resistance and bluetooth connectivity. The FCC did not test any LTE, Wi-Fi, or any other wireless technology, which suggests they are not present in the device.

Is this a new Fossil hybrid watch?

In all likelihood, this appears to be Fossil’s newest hybrid watch platform. The evidence is all there too. It uses a CR2430 3V battery found in some older Fossil hybrid watches. Although these cells are not rechargeable, according to Fossil documentation, they provide electricity for four to six months. This detail suggests that the device will not have a complex display.

The rear design could also be a giveaway. The explanation of the position of the label shows a picture of the back of the device. There are no heart rate or SpO2 sensors visible, but a groove in the middle to open the case for battery replacement.

Fossil previously launched hybrid watches with the prefix “NDW” under the banners of Emporio Armani, Misfit and Skagen. We also don’t think this could be a successor to the e-ink Fossil Hybrid series, as the model numbers of the two lines do not match. For example, the Fossil Hybrid HR uses the prefix “FTW”.

However, it is still a little early to say exactly what Fossil’s next hybrid watch platform could be in terms of features and design. The FCC has banned key visuals and specifications until August 1st.

Hybrid watches fuse the essential technology of smartwatches into analog cases. If you were hoping this would be the Fossil Gen 6 platform, you’ll have to wait a little longer. However, if you are in the market for a new hybrid watch, it seems that a new Fossil option could be with us soon.
