Cursed, the latest medieval fantasy show emerging from Netflix’s vault (see: The witcher, The dark crystal) offers another reinterpretation of the legend of King Arthur. Instead of following a young Arthur’s trials and difficulties, however, it focuses on a young Nimue, also known as the tragic lady of the lake, who is often portrayed as an antagonist. It will be interesting to see another side of the sorceress in this coming-of-age story that hits Netflix on July 17 and 13 reasons why Katherine Langford stars.

The series with 10 episodes is based on a graphic novel of the same name by Frank Miller, the revered graphic novel behind Sin City and 300. Somewhere in his busy schedule, Miller Cursed adapted for the small screen with TV author Tom Wheeler, who co-created the Graphic novel and also writes several episodes of the show.

It looks like they managed to evoke Miller’s distinctive, grainy aesthetics, and Nimue, who emerges from the water with a sword, brings a lot of witchcraft vibes, given the immense popularity of Netflix’s video game adaptation with Henry Cavill is not a bad thing.

Merlin and Arthur, played by Gustaf Skarsgard and Devon Terrell, will be featured in the story along with a fascinating character called Weeping Monk, played by Daniel Sharman. Peter Mullan, who appeared on the small screen not long ago as James Delos in Westworld, appears to be the leader of the fiery Red Paladins. All of these parties will clash as they fight for the mighty Excalibur sword.

Read the series overview below.

“Based on the New York Times bestseller, Cursed is a reinterpretation of the Arthurian legend, narrated through the eyes of Nimue, a young woman with a mysterious gift destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake When her mother dies, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a humble mercenary, to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword, and as she travels, Nimue becomes a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrible Red Paladins and her complicit King Uther. Cursed is a coming-of-age story whose themes are familiar to our time: the extinction of the natural world, religious terror, senseless war, and the courage to face the impossible. “
