  • Netflix is planning a free weekend promotion in India.
  • This would make the company library open to people for 48 hours.

Netflix is currently offering some movies and TV shows for free to attract more subscribers. Now the company plans to offer its entire catalog for free for a limited time.

The company confirmed its intention to launch a 48-hour StreamFest event in India that will open the entire content library to free users for a weekend.

Greg Peters, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Product Officer of Netflix, explained the move during the third quarter earnings call:

An idea we’re looking forward to and we’ll see how to do it, but we think giving everyone in a country free access to Netflix for a weekend to see a ton of new people could be a great way getting to know the amazing stories we have, the service, how the service works really create an event and hopefully get a few of these people to sign up. So we’re going to try that in India and we’ll see how that goes.

The plan comes after that protocol and XDAMishaal Rahman reported evidence of a 48-hour StreamFest event on the latest version of the Netflix Android app.

Text strings found in the app indicate that you don’t need to enter any credit card information to attend the event. So you don’t have to worry about being charged after the action. Unfortunately, a text string indicating that StreamFest is “at full capacity” suggests that it is limited to a certain number of people. But hopefully the threshold is still pretty high.
