Sharing your Wi-Fi network with others is a complicated process, but future versions of Android can massively streamline that process with the help of Nearby Share.
Per commit to AOSP discovered by XDAAndroid’s equivalent to AirDrop couldn’t just be used as a file and link sharing service this time around. Near Share, you may soon be able to share your WiFi password with others in the room, eliminating the need to give out QR codes or notes. The commit provides a button that says “W-Fi Share Intent,” while a long press of that button “opens a Wi-Fi QR Share.”
Since Android 10, Google has allowed users to log into networks with QR codes. However, users still need to physically scan them with their cameras. Nearby share should mitigate this while supporting all modern Android phones.
Before you get into the celebrations, the commit isn’t set in stone, but there’s a chance it could debut in Android 12. The next version of Android may also see improvements to the distribution of operating system updates and memory management.
