NBC’s Peacock: Prices, devices, US launch date, shows and movies to expect

peacock started – somehow. NBCUniversal’s service from Comcast, a streaming competitor of Netflix and Disney Plus, started on April 15 as a “sneak peek” for Comcast cable customers. However, the nationwide launch will only take place on July 15th. So far, the service has confirmed support only for Apple’s streaming devices and Xbox One.

Because of the Coronavirus pandemichowever, several plans for peacockThe wider rollout has been improved. The list of original programs is largely closed, and the plan to piggyback Peacock’s national start on NBC’s live coverage of the Summer Olympics is controversial now that the games have been postponed to 2021.

So when Peacock launches in the U.S. in July, it won’t be exactly what NBC envisioned.

Peacock is NBCUniversal’s entry into the streaming wars, a seven-month window in which media and technology giants are unleashing a wave of new services for Netflix. With more than 167 million members, Netflix dominates streaming subscriptions. Peacock is also facing new services such as Disney Plus and Apple TV Plusand WarnerMedia HBO max next month – not to mention Amazon Prime Video, Hulu and CBS All Accessamong other established options. (Note: ViacomCBS is the parent company of CNET.) These struggles not only determine who shapes the future of television as streaming becomes the norm, they also affect how many services you pay to watch your favorite shows and films.

During the pandemic – when people stay at home and are isolated from friends, family, and many forms of entertainment – Peacock holds on to its limited start, just when people are most excited about streaming. It’s even like the virus and its respiratory disease COVID-19 have discontinued television production worldwide, including most Peacock originals.

Peacock will still have a large vault of existing shows and films that can be streamed there, including The office, Parks and recreation, 30 Rock and Law & Order, not to mention countless films from the Universal and Dreamworks animation studios. But there will only be a “handful” of originals available when it finally launches across the US in July. The science fiction drama Beautiful new world is essentially done, the company said, and its Psych 2 film is in good condition. Peacock is optimistic that the restart of Punky Brewster and Saved by the Bell will be available this year.

Most of the exclusive new programs will only be released much later than planned. Only in 2021 will Peacock “really make progress”, said Matt Strauss, the managing director responsible for Peacock.

Still, Peacock will have an integrated free tier when it starts this summer. This free version of the service contains advertisements and will seal off about half of the Peacock programs. However, since fewer original exclusive products have to be placed behind the Paywall, free users will miss less.

So is it worth paying for Peacock? All the details about Peacock are listed below, but basically: if you love NBC’s programming style or want to stream more popular movies – and especially if Netflix made you hate commercials – you might still have to pay one other streaming service.

When does Peacock start?

NBCUniversal released a preview of the Peacock streaming service for Comcast’s Xfinity X1 cable customers and its Flex streaming customers on April 15th. Peacock will be introduced to everyone else in the U.S. on July 15. The company is currently evaluating whether it can accelerate its national launch as the demand for streaming videos increases as people get stuck in their homes due to the corona virus.

International expansion will come, NBC said, but no schedule has been set.

Peacock’s launch came at a busy time for streaming services. April also made the debut of Quibi, a mobile streaming service by the Hollywood giant Jeffrey Katzenberg that focuses on bite-size films. In May, HBO max will start in the US.

What devices can I see it on?

Currently, the “Sneak Peek” version of Peacock is only available for streaming through Comcast’s own platforms. This means that Xfinity X1 cable customers and Flex streaming customers can see Peacock through their X1 box or Flex streaming box on TVs.

For the nationwide launch in July, Peacock has so far confirmed its support for:

  • Apple devices: You can stream the service to apps for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD. You can also sign up for Peacock or improve your membership with in-app purchases. Apple will also integrate Peacock into its own TV app, which allows you to combine certain streaming channels to watch them in one place.
  • Xbox One consoles: Microsoft’s Xbox One family of devices, including Xbox One S and Xbox One X, has an app for Peacock, and the service itself can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store. You can also register or update Peach directly in the Peacock app on Xbox devices with in-app purchase.

How much does Peacock cost?

Ultimately, Peacock will have three tiers: a limited one that is free, an all-inclusive tier that costs $ 5 a month with ads, and an all-inclusive tier that costs $ 10 a month without ads .

While Peacock for Comcast customers are previewing, this limited free tier doesn’t really exist at the moment, but is expected to be part of the nationwide rollout of Peacock, which is now scheduled for July 15th. More details on this free tier are below.

The ad-financed all-inclusive version of the service is free for Comcast X1 and Flex customers, as they can already do business with Comcast. These customers can also upgrade to watch Peacock ad-free by paying $ 5 a month. If you want to upgrade to ad-free, X1 and Flex customers can continue to do so www.peacocktv.com.

For everyone else, when Peacock starts nationally, the free tier limits how much you can see. For example, Peacock originally planned to offer only selected episodes of his originals for free, while the rest were held back in his paywall. This limited free tier should include more than 7,500 hours of movies, current season TV, classic TV, curated daily news, sports, Hispanic programs, and Peacock streaming channels.

Both paid levels are Peacock Premium, basically an all-access pass for everything in service. That means more than 15,000 hours of content, about twice as much as on the free tier. Peacock Premium costs $ 5 with advertising, or you can upgrade to an ad-free version for $ 10.

After the national launch, Peacock Comcast X1 and Flex subscribers will continue to offer the premium version of the service at a $ 5 discount. So if you want to watch advertising, you don’t pay anything extra; If you want to watch ad-free, you’ll have to pay $ 5 a month. NBC has announced it is working on partnerships to offer this discount to a wider range of consumers.

Pricing at Peacock’s competition is critical at the moment.

Among the services with ad-financed options, Hulu costs $ 6 a month with ads and $ 12 a month without ads. CBS All Access charges $ 6 for its advertising tier and $ 10 for the ad-free version. And Quibi, a mobile-only subscription video service with a staggering array of stars, has set its monthly rate at $ 5 with ads and $ 8 without ads.

By comparison, Netflix, which has no ads, offers the cheapest tier at $ 9 a month, while the most popular tariff is $ 13. Apple TV Plus is $ 5 a month, Disney Plus is $ 7 a month and HBO max will be $ 15 a month when it starts in May. None of them contain advertising.

What’s up with that name?

Peacock is a nod to NBC’s long-standing logo and mascot.

When the service was unveiled in January, author, producer and actress Tina Fey said she originally wanted the title 30 Rock to be The Peacock. “I was told it was a tough no and the censorship would not pass,” she said. “And here we are.”

What Happens to NBC Programming on Hulu?

At the moment, NBC’s shows that are being streamed on Hulu are not going anywhere.

NBC has been a partner in Hulu for many years. But last year, NBC and Comcast signed a contract with Disney to give Disney full control. This deal included conditions that essentially allow NBC to program on both Hulu and Peacock at the same time.

The office will begin streaming on Peacock from 2021.

NBC

However, in about two years, NBC has the right (but not the obligation) to withdraw all of its programs from Hulu if it so wishes.

“It is too early to say whether NBC wants to continue on this path,” said NBCUniversal Chairman Steve Burke at the presentation that featured Peacock in January.

Shows and films: What can I see on Peacock?

The company has announced that Peacock Premium will have more than 15,000 hours of content available. About half of it will be available at the free, ad-supported level.

The plans described below were formulated before the corona virus changed the status quo across the country. People across the country are not just confined to their homes and are streaming more, television productions have stopped worldwide. And the Olympic Games that NBC broadcasts in the US should be a big catch for Peacock’s nationwide launch in July. Now the games are postponed to 2021.

Even Peacock himself is not quite sure what the service has to consider when starting nationally. “Like you, we’re all very unclear when certain things will come back to normal,” said Matt Strauss, director of Peacock and chair of NBCUniversal Digital Enterprises, in a briefing on Tuesday.

We know that Peacock’s “Sneak Peek” version, which is now live for Comcast customers, has only a few original shows available and all are children’s titles. Until Peacock’s national launch, there will be a “handful” of originals, but most of its slate production has ceased. For the national launch, the science fiction drama Beautiful new world is “essentially done” The service’s Psych 2 film is in good shape, and the company is optimistic that its Punky Brewster and Saved by the Bell restart will be available this year.

But as you can read below, before the pandemic, Peacock had planned a much more robust lineup of the original programming.

Another important note about available shows that have nothing to do with the corona virus: Peacock won’t have to stream The Office until next year. Netflix has rights to it until 2021.

As originally planned, Peacock said its free library will include:

  • Next day access to the current seasons of NBC broadcasts in their first season (known as the Freshmen series).
  • Select episodes of Marquee Peacock originals (but not full seasons).
  • Curated genre channels that NBC has characterized as things like SNL Vault, Family Movie Night and Olympic Profiles.
  • Complete classic series and popular films.
  • Curated daily news and sports programs, including the Olympics.
  • Spanish language content.

With the Premium membership, you generally receive an All Access Pass. It includes everything on the free tier plus:

  • Full seasons of peacock originals.
  • Next day access to the current seasons of recurring NBC shows.
  • Early access to NBC’s late night talk shows. The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon will be broadcast on Peacock at 8 p.m. ET followed by late night with Seth Meyers at 9pm. ET.
  • Additional sports like Premier League football.

For its originals, the company tends to new series of talents that have a long history of success at NBC, such as Tiny Fey, Amy Poehler and Mindy Kaling. It is also bet on restarts of shows with a lasting appeal. A revival of Battlestar Galactica (itself a restart of the science fiction series of the 1970s) by Mr. Robot inventor Sam Esmail and a restart of Punky Brewster and Saved by the Bell have already been announced. According to DeadlineNBCUniversal hopes to restart The Office, which was itself a remake of a British series.

Peacock will also include live programs that were originally supposed to include what has now been moved Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

For news programming, Peacock will use brands such as NBC News, Sky News, MSNBC and CNBC. The same day, NBC Nightly News broadcasts with Lester Holt and Meet the Press with Chuck Todd are streamed. Live news channels include NBC News Now, Sky News and NBC / Sky Global News (a new channel). There are clips from Today, CNBC, MSNBC, E! News, NBC Nightly News and Meet the Press; and it will include original Meet the Press franchise content, investigative documentaries including the entire Dateline and Lock Up seasons, and library documentaries from NBC News and CNBC.

The following is the original, planned plan that NBC had arranged for Peacock, but the time when most of these projects will actually become available is now unclear.
