Last years Motorola Rebooting Razr should have been a blast. An iconic name tied to a cutting edge form factor – what could go wrong? A lot is emerging, especially in the leaflet world where nothing seems to be going according to plan. Some questionable design choices resulted in a poorly rated device that continued the foldable triplet trend.
However, this week the restart is back. And this time it’s well refined. In a blog post announcing the launch of the “new Razr with 5G”, the Lenovo brand was quick to state, “We’ve heard from consumers that they feel attached to their devices and are looking for a way to stay connected while still staying connected to live the moment. “To be more precise, here is a quote ProWellTech was offered by a spokesperson:
We believe in our foldable system, which is why we’ve kept largely the same technology from the first iteration of Razr. In advancing the Razr design around 5G, we focused on areas where mechanical improvements need to be made based on direct customer feedback.
In other words, the new Razr is the device that developed the customer feedback. Now with 5G. This corresponds to the new version of the Galaxy Fold that Samsung recently launched. As many in the industry expected, the first round of foldable devices would encounter many of the problems commonly attributed to first generation devices. Here, that means an update of things like the hinge, which took some warmth from the reviews the first time around.
There is also an improved camera – another problem with the original. This time it’s a 48-megapixel quad-pixel sensor with improved low-light shooting and faster autofocus. There is also a 20 megapixel device in the device. The battery – another pain point of the original – has been slightly improved from 2,510 mAh to 2,800 mAh. The company says it’s an “all-day” battery, though 5G’s requirements may have something to say about it. I suspect the thinness requirements really put a wall when it comes to maximizing battery capacity.
The 5G comes courtesy of the Snapdragon 765G processor. This means that a medium-range processor (710 last time) is retained in the original. This time around, however, Qualcomm has incorporated next-generation wireless devices to accelerate adoption. At $ 1,400, it’s $ 100 cheaper than the original, but it’s certainly still expensive enough to turn a mediocre processor into an absolute heads-scratcher. Sure, you’re paying for the foldable screen here, but at this price point, everything really should be the latest and greatest.
The new New Razr will be available this fall.
