Moto takes the cheaper route
The Motorola Edge series had been the company’s first true flagship phone line in a while, and we thought the Edge Plus was a pretty solid device in that regard. It is high time for a successor and that would be the new Motorola Edge 20 series.
We actually have three devices in the family, compared to only two last time. There is the Edge 20 Lite, which brings up the rear, the standard Edge 20 and the top-level Edge 20 Pro (see above). All three devices offer 108 MP main cameras with non-binning (presumably the Samsung Isocell HM2), a 32 MP selfie camera in a punch-hole cutout, 5G, OLED screens with a high refresh rate and 30 W Charge via the charger supplied.
Motorola Edge 20 Pro
The Edge 20 Pro opts for the Snapdragon 870 instead of the top-end Snapdragon 888 chipset. This is an interesting choice since last year’s Edge Plus delivered the Snapdragon 865, which was the best SoC in Qualcomm’s portfolio at the time .
“We found (Snapdragon) 870 was good enough for what we wanted to achieve, ”said a Motorola representative in response to a Android authority Question. They added that pricing was another consideration when choosing the Snapdragon 870 over the 888. And the phone is cheaper than the Edge Plus for $ 999 when it launches at UK and European prices (more on that later).
The Pro device from Motorola also offers a 6.7-inch OLED panel with 144 Hz and a 4,500 mAh battery. As for the cameras, we have a 108 MP main camera, a 16 MP ultra wide camera with macro mode and an 8 MP 5X periscope lens (with up to 50x digital zoom).
Edge 20
The standard model retains some of the same features as the Pro variant, such as the main and ultra-wide cameras and the 144 Hz OLED screen. However, Motorola has opted for a thinner design at 6.99mm, which also results in a phone with a 4,000mAh battery.
Other notable differences are the replacement of the Snapdragon 870 in favor of the medium, but still powerful Snapdragon 778G SoC and the replacement of the 5X periscope camera with a 3X 8MP telephoto lens. Expect the Edge 20 in the 6GB / 128GB or 8GB / 128GB options.
Edge 20 Lite
Like the idea of the Edge 20 series but don’t want to spend a lot of money? This is where the Edge 20 Lite comes in. The cheapest device in the family relies on a budget-oriented Dimensity 720 chipset, 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage.
The phone also has a 6.7-inch 90Hz OLED screen, 5,000mAh battery (with the 30W charge mentioned above), and a triple rear camera system. The latter consists of a 108MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide camera with macro mode and a 2MP depth sensor.
Motorola Edge 20 Series Pricing
Those who want the premium Edge 20 Pro will have to spend money £ 649.99 or € 699.99 for the only 12GB / 256GB model. The phone is available in vegan blue leather, midnight blue and iridescent white. Do you want the Vanilla Edge 20 instead? Then spend £ 429.99 or € 499.99 with color options like Frosted Emerald, Frosted Gray, and Frosted White. In the meantime, the Motorola Edge 20 Lite has started £299.99 or €349.99. The device is available in Electric Graphite and Lagoon Green.
Moto says all three phones will be available in Asia, Europe and Latin America. Meanwhile, the Edge 20 Lite and Pro models will also be available in the Middle East. There’s no word on availability in the US yet, although Motorola has hinted that an Edge series phone would hit the US later this year, saying: “Motorola is excited to share its commitment to deliver a new 5G Edge family device in North America this fall.”
The Edge 20 series does have one downside, however, and that is the fact that the phones only get one operating system upgrade and two years of security patches. You can read more about this decision here.
