Most readers would buy continuous zoom camera phones
Recognition: David Imel / Android Authority
Zoom lenses are widespread on the best camera phones for good reason. They bring distant subjects closer together, and newer technologies have greatly improved the fruits of these cameras. Using two dedicated zoom cameras has also helped OEMs improve the quality of footage at certain zoom levels.
But this setup may not be needed much longer, at least for Samsung. Rumor has it that the Samsung Galaxy S22 series could offer even more image enhancements with a continuous zoom camera foreseen. This means the company can get away with a single zoom camera that can span multiple zoom areas.
To this end, we asked readers if they would buy a phone with such a camera. Here’s what you told us:
Would you buy a phone with a continuous zoom camera?
Results
Over 54% of voters firmly believe they would buy a phone with the technology and tick the box “yes, of course”.
Not everyone is convinced of cameras with continuous zoom yet. Just under 36% of respondents said they need to check the quality of the camera and the cost of the device before making a decision.
Overall, less than 10% of readers are either satisfied with their current smartphone zoom functions or are not interested in zoom at all.
Here’s what you told us:
- Wongwatt: I’m interested, although I hate Samsung’s Android. If they manage to roll this over to a smaller device than the current Ultra models, I may have to give my money to Samsung.
- Painfully_Candid: I just hate how big the Ultra devices are. Heck, the base S10 is too big as it is. But when it comes to the cameras, nobody does a great job. And if someone can’t build a camera that is so obviously superior that no one would deny it, then it’s basically a coin toss.
- MM_Rafez: I would say not to play with 10x unless the zoom can go beyond 10x. I think the variable zoom lens should be between 2x and 5x. Since this is a new technology, I don’t think it will be possible to give a 2x-10x lens.
- Setebos: I know we are talking about cell phones here and this may actually be a useful feature, but I just want to point out that premium lenses are always superior to zoom lenses in real cameras. If you want the best quality and larger apertures, top notch lenses are the way to go. Zooms come in handy when you can’t change lenses.
That’s it for this poll. Thank you for your votes and comments. If you have any further thoughts on the rumored camera technology of the Samsung Galaxy S22 or the results of this survey, please drop them below.
