Apparently more than 500 million people use the Google Assistant. According to reports, 70% of smart speaker owners in the US use Amazon Echo devices with Alexa. Apple’s Siri continues to claim the largest relative market share among smartphone voice assistants, and a survey says voice assistant use on phones in the U.S. has increased from 51.5% in 2018 to 56.4% in 2020.

With all these statistics going, we’ve thought about asking our readers if and how often they use voice assistants on their phones. We have published a poll giving our readers several options to choose from. Here are the results of that survey.

How often do you use voice assistants on your phone?

Results

We received a total of 1,932 votes in our poll and the results are pretty clear. Most of our readers (50.2%) don’t use voice assistants on their phones. However, it is possible for these people to use a voice activated smart speaker or other device.

Meanwhile, 19.2% of voters said they use voice assistants on their phones at least once a week. That’s still a pretty low usage figure as almost all smartphones support digital assistants these days.

12.7% of respondents said they use a voice assistant at least two to five times a day, while 10% use it on their phones once a day. Only 7.5% of voters are really into voice assistants on the phone and use them more than five times a day.

It seems that people are pretty happy to be typing on their phones instead of using voice commands. This doesn’t mean voice assistants aren’t popular, maybe not so much on phones either.

Your comments

Wongwatt: All of that effort put into voice assistants, and almost 50%, they don’t use at all. I have “Celia” on my P40 Pro +, I don’t even know what it can do.

This second: I only use the Google Assistant in emergencies.

Montisaquadeis: Since I hate to speak thanks to my autism, I never use a voice assistant and had the Bixby button on my S8 set to work as a physical back button, which was insanely useful. It’s a shame that I can’t do that with my Grade 10+.

Nate Rogers: When I had an iPhone, hardly ever. Siri is such a terrible terrible thing. Now I’ve jumped on Android. I use the Google Assistant a lot because it is actually helpful and responsive.

Rahul Pai: Very rare for “What kind of song is that?” It’s too slow / unpredictable for most other things.

ribogushter: I don’t use it often on my phone because I mainly use it on my watch.

Ozzie Khoo: Literally just for the weather. To say of all things:[Location] Weather [time/day]“Is fast and 99% guaranteed to work as expected. Almost everything else takes too long or is just not accurate.

Brian Fowler: Only if I accidentally pressed the appropriate button on my V60. I’ve tried it a few times when it was relatively new, but it was a lot easier just typing what I want to know or do in the search bar than using the Google Assistant.

Painfully_Candid: When I had a Windows Phone, I used Cortana all the time every day because it was actually useful. Now nobody is doing this right. Nobody. Every single assistant is rubbish, just toys.

John Sullivan: The only time I’ve ever used it on the phone is driving (with a speakerphone) and even then it’s very rare. Now I work almost exclusively at home, don’t travel long distances, so I never bother plugging the phone into the speaker while I’m driving.

Joe Black: About once a day – sometimes weather, turn on BlueTooth, turn Nvidia Shield on / off when I can’t find the remote control. No light, no climate, nothing special, and I have two Home Max, Nest Max, Nest Mini speakers and Lenovo alarm clocks with displays. They are usually only used for playback or as a photo frame.
