- Capcom has unveiled Monster Hunter Rise, a revival of traditional Monster Hunter gameplay for Nintendo Switch.
- The game will be released on March 26, 2021 with new elements like a claw and a dog that you can ride.
- There’s also Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, an RPG offshoot arriving in the summer of 2021.
Believe it or not, there wasn’t a Monster Hunter game built from the ground up for the Nintendo Switch – Monster Hunter Generations really was an upgraded 3DS title. That has to change, however, as Capcom announced both Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin for the Switch.
Monster Hunter Rise is the flagship of the two, bringing back the classic action of killing creatures from before Monster Hunter: World with a few modern twists, including a seamless environment. You protect Kamura Village from a monster invasion and have new tools to quickly travel the mountainous landscape (hence the “rise” of the title). A wirebug is a quick way to climb cliffs and buildings, while a palamute service dog allows you to ride on your back and help out in combat.
The title will be available on the Switch on March 26, 2021.
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is a completely different game. Capcom calls it a “story-driven” role-playing game in which you become a monster rider who can make “deeper connections” with the beasts. Not many details are available for the game yet, but you will have to deal with an entire species that appears to be extinct.
The sequel to Stories will be released for the Switch sometime in the summer of 2021. Further details will be announced by then.
Monster Hunter Rise and Stories 2 could be welcome additions if you like fantasy action and RPGs on the Switch, especially if you’re a fan of the franchise. At the same time, they reflect confidence in Nintendo’s platform – Capcom releases major Switch-only games, even if the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are attracting the attention of many gamers.
