Mix it up with these 5 really weird PC games you can play right now
Downfall: forever, Fourteen days, Final Fantasy VII, Valorant. All popular games at the moment, but all a little familiar. Too familiar.
Most of us have been stuck in the house for more than a month, and maybe the familiar isn’t exactly what you’re longing for. Instead, try something completely different and download these PC games that range from something unusual to really strange.
Tommo
One of my favorite games for PlayStation 2 was a Japanese import called Disaster Report in 2003. In it, an intrepid survivor tries to escape a city that was destroyed by a violent earthquake – partly exploration, partly survival, partly unpleasant conversation simulator. The sequels were generally not available in the U.S., but Disaster Report 4 appeared almost out of nowhere on Steam and PS4 a few weeks ago (it was released in Japan in 2018). It is strange. It’s stilted. Frankly, it looks like it’s still a PS2 game. I don’t care, I love it and it certainly fits our current zeitgeist of revenge on nature.
Ysbryd games
A retro-style horror adventure, narrated as if it were a classic 1-bit old school computer game (using a monochromatic color palette). It’s Lovecraftian with a strong J-horror vibe that combines point-and-click exploration with simple monster battles. The art style is really creepy and the world shifts subtly as you play in Scaryville. Tip: If you have Xbox Game Pass for PC, this game is also available as part of this service.

Disco Elysium was the Art house game of 2019, and if you haven’t traveled to the city of Martinaise in the alternative universe in the European universe, you really miss it. It is part of Agatha Christie, part of Hunter S. Thompson, as an ever-wasted detective tries to solve a murder, uncover political conspiracies, and hopefully find his missing badge.

This talkative, creepy RPG is a real hidden gem and uses a hand-drawn style that reminds me of something Edward Gorey. In the game, the entire city of Arkham has been mysteriously evicted by an evil force (or maybe the rest of the world has disappeared), and everyone from hooded cultists to stranded Boston gangsters is fighting to take control of them City.
Afterburner Studios
This is an excellent free preview version of an upcoming game. It is an action game that takes place in a foggy world of clear dreaming. In the daytime, your protagonist visits the café or bookstore and talks to the citizens while fighting dream monsters at night and getting a little stronger each time.
