  • MediaTek announced the Dimensity 900 chipset.
  • It’s a mid-range 5G processor with the latest in CPU and GPU technology.
  • The first phones with the SoC are expected to hit the market in the next few weeks.

MediaTek was reportedly the world’s largest smartphone chip maker in 2020, ousting Qualcomm. Much of the recent success can be attributed to the growing choice of Dimensity 5G silicon. The company has now announced the Dimensity 900 as the youngest member of this family.

The Dimensity 900 is a 6 nm chipset, similar to the latest SoC of the flagship Dimensity 1200. You get an octa-core CPU with two new Cortex-A78 cores (up to 2.4 GHz) and six Cortex-A55 Cores (up to 2 GHz). So it’s not quite like the four heavy CPU cores we see in flagship processors. Additionally, the Cortex-A78 is just a minor upgrade over the Cortex-A77, but we’re still happy to see the latest CPU here.

MediaTek’s latest processor also features an Arm Mali-G68 MC4 GPU, which is essentially the same GPU as the Mali-G78 used in flagship models, but with far fewer cores (anything with six or fewer cores gets the G68 -Description). So if you are looking for a good gaming experience on a small budget, you should keep an eye on the benchmarks / ratings for devices with this chipset.

What else does the Dimensity 900 offer?

If you switch to connectivity, you can expect 5G below 6 GHz (still no mmWave here) with maximum download speeds of 2.77 Gbps. Other connectivity features include 5G + 5G dual SIM support, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 capabilities.

In terms of camera functionality, the MediaTek Dimensity 900 offers support for 108MP single cameras, 20MP + 20MP double cameras, up to four simultaneous cameras, 4K HDR and 4K / 30fps recording.

Other notable features include a third generation APU for machine learning, a maximum screen resolution of 2,520 x 1,080, a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz, HDR10 + support and support for the AV1 codec.

Expect the first phones with the MediaTek Dimensity 900 to be launched “on the world market” in the second quarter of 2021, according to the chip manufacturer. That means you can count on gadgets in the next few weeks.
