Microsoft Surface Duo 2 leaks, could get better camera

TL; DR
- The first leaked images of the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 have just landed.
- The leak reveals a redesigned rear view camera module with three lenses, suggesting better camera hardware.
- Microsoft’s treatment of imaging as an afterthought was a major pain point of the original Surface Duo.
One of the reasons it might not have gone well was the fact that it ignored some smartphone aspects that buyers prioritize. For example, the Surface Duo camera was quite weak. However, a new leak suggests that the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 could fix this pain point.
The leaked image below is from a relatively unknown YouTuber Tech Rat. At first we were skeptical about the authenticity of the leak. However, Windows headquarters then with his own confirmation that this picture reflects exactly what they know about the Surface Duo 2 so we are ok to promote it here.
Take a look at the picture below.
Microsoft Surface Duo 2 leak
The picture suggests that the overall design of the Surface Duo 2 may not change significantly. The hinge looks the same, the Microsoft logo is in the same place, and the color scheme of the phone looks similar.
However, there now seems to be a rear-view camera module. If you recall, the original Surface Duo didn’t have a rear camera at all. Instead, you’d use the internal selfie camera as the main camera (the hinged nature of the device allows for this). Of course, a single selfie camera won’t produce great photos and videos.

The rear camera of the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 appears to have three lenses. The module itself also appears to be very thick, which strongly suggests premium lenses and sensors. There is also a flash and some kind of light sensor.
This is all good news for buyers. There may have been some people out there who would have loved to get a Surface Duo but shy away from the lack of premium imaging. If Microsoft can fix this weak point (and fix the software), it could have a winner with the Microsoft Surface Duo 2.
