Microsoft could bring Android apps to Windows 10 in 2021
- Microsoft is reportedly considering adding Android app support to Windows 10.
- This could potentially lead to Windows 10 via the Microsoft Store in 2021.
It’s already possible to run Android apps on Windows 10 computers thanks to emulators like Bluestacks, but it seems like Microsoft is shutting down the middleman and bringing support for Android apps straight to the platform.
Windows Central journalist Zac Bowden reports that the company is considering bringing Android apps to Windows in 2021. In particular, Bowden says it could hit the Microsoft Store.
There is no word on exactly how Microsoft would implement this and whether it would come to Windows on Arm. The latter certainly makes sense as the vast majority of Android apps are designed for arm devices.
Many apps like Gmail, Uber, and others require support for Google Play Services, but it’s not clear whether Microsoft wants to offer this suite. Other platforms that offer native Android app compatibility (e.g. BlackBerry 10, Windows 10 Mobile Early Preview) also did not provide native Google Play Services integration.
Still, native Android app support would be a welcome addition to the Windows 10 stable, especially given that MacOS is getting support for iPad and iPhone apps. Hopefully this will encourage more Android developers to build their apps with bigger screen support too, as this was a minor complaint with leaflets.
