Mercedes-Benz doesn’t foresee synthetic fuels as a practical solution
British car maker McLaren thinks Synthetic fuels could save the engine as we know. In Germany Mercedes-Benz considers the solution “not realizable”.
The brand’s research and development manager, Markus Schafer, said Autocar In a Thursday report, the idea of synthetic fuels is likely to benefit another sector first: aviation. Cars might be lower, but the R&D manager won’t see it in the next 10 years. He also believes that using energy to make any kind of synthetic fuel is counterproductive. It boils down to using energy to generate new energy, while engineers could simply put energy into a battery.
The parent company of Mercedes-Benz, Daimler, did not immediately send back a request for further comments.
Instead, the company focuses solely on electrification technologies to meet emissions standards. When Mercedes-Benz considered a new platform, Schäfer confirmed that electrification was the top priority. We have seen this strategy grow with more across the company’s range of vehicles Mild hybrid systems included.
So far, batteries and electric cars seem to have been the short-term winners in the auto industry. Research into synthetic fuels is still at an early stage, as companies continue to refine and make batteries more efficient. We even heard of units that could Leave out cobalt, a rare metal that doesn’t make batteries very environmentally friendly.
Maybe another automaker has a breakthrough, but Mercedes is in full swing electrical future.
