Meet the new Batwoman: Javicia Leslie replaces Ruby Rose on CW superhero series

(Disclosure: The CW is a joint venture between Warner Bros. Entertainment and CBS that also publishes CNET.)
“I am very proud to be the first black actress to play Batwoman’s legendary role on TV, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to be part of this groundbreaking show that has pioneered the LGBTQ + community.” Leslie told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday.
Rose also praised Leslie’s casting on her Instagram on Wednesday.
“OMG !! This is incredible!” Rose wrote. “I’m so glad that Batwoman is played by an amazing black woman. I want to congratulate Javicia Leslie for taking on the bat cloak. They’re entering an amazing cast and crew. I can’t wait to see season 2 will be great!”
Instead of following in Kate’s footsteps as Kate Kane, The CW created one new DC Comics character named Ryan Wilder for Leslie to play on the show.
The original casting call had More details about the new character. “Ryan spent years as a drug addict, dodging the GCPD (Gotham City Police Department) and masking her pain with bad habits. Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out-lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionately fallible. And very much not your stereotypical all-American hero. “
“I love Kate Kane – that’s why I wanted to do the show. We’ll never wipe it out,” said showrunner Caroline Dries. “In fact, her disappearance will be one of the secrets of season two. I don’t want to reveal any of our surprises, but please know to all enthusiastic fans that LGBTQ + justice is at the heart of Batwoman and we have no intention of giving it up.”
Season 2 of Batwoman is due to debut on The CW in January 2021, but that could change with production delays due to the outbreak of the corona virus.
