Most tech companies struggled through 2020, but chipmaker MediaTek arguably had one of the best years in its history. According to Omdia (via), the company topped the shipping charts for smartphone chipsets for the first time in its history DigiTimes).

MediaTek reportedly shipped 351.8 million smartphone chipsets in 2020 – an increase of 113.8 million from 2020. Today, MediaTek holds a global market share of 27.2% compared to just 17.2% in 2019.

This news shouldn’t come as a big surprise. In December, Counterpoint reported that the company had replaced Qualcomm as the world’s largest chipset provider. At the time, there were indications that the company would later take over the US company. According to Omdia, the growth is reportedly due to the company’s focus on entry-level and mid-range smartphones.

Xiaomi, Samsung supports MediaTek’s growth

MediaTek didn’t do it alone, however. The biggest surge in growth was due to Xiaomi’s explosive overall growth in 2020. It was MediaTek’s largest customer in 2020, reportedly shipping 223% more smartphones using the company’s chips in 2020 than in 2019.

Oppo was MediaTek’s second largest customer in 2020. In 2020, 55.3 million devices shipped with MediaTek chipsets, compared to 46.3 million in 2019, according to the report.

Samsung also saw demand for its MediaTek smartphones grow by over 250% in 2020 compared to 2019. Some of the company’s cheaper mid-range phones use MediaTek chips.

According to reports, Omdia expects MediaTek to continue growing in 2021. Huawei and Honor will also join the chipmaker’s platoon.
