MediaTek extends its lead over Qualcomm in chipset market

TL; DR
- Mediatek has reportedly expanded its lead over Qualcomm in terms of smartphone SoC shipping.
- Counterpoint’s data for Q2 2021 shows the company has a 43% market share compared to Qualcomm’s 24%.
Mediatek made headlines earlier this year after it was revealed that the Taiwanese chip designer was paving the way for chipset shipments in 2020. Counterpoint research released its second quarter 2021 results on processor shipments and it looks like Mediatek has hit new heights.
According to the tracking company, Mediatek gained 43% of the global smartphone SoC market in the second quarter of 2021, compared to 35% in the first quarter of 2021. The chip giant Qualcomm, on the other hand, had a market share of 24% compared to 29% in the Previous quarter.
Counterpoint found that Mediatek’s growth was due to the company’s focus on mid-to-low-priced 5G chipsets, as well as LTE SoCs. Qualcomm’s performance was reportedly due to being more negatively impacted by the industry-wide chip shortage as well as lower earnings.
However, the research firm reported that Qualcomm accounts for 55% of the 5G baseband modem market, compared to 30% for Mediatek. Both are up from 29% and 11% respectively a year ago.
Mediatek has traditionally excelled in the mid-range and budget chipset segments, but Qualcomm’s processors are usually the first choice for big brands at the flagship level. It seems this is the next segment the Taiwanese company is targeting, as it told journalists earlier this year that it would offer flagship processors that “push the boundaries of technology.”
