Mazda3 turbo will officially be a thing in July
You asked for it and Mazda is almost ready to deliver. On Thursday, the Japanese automaker pulled a sneaky Thursday on us and teased what it almost certainly is Mazda3 Turbo.
Remember rumors really got worse earlier this month after screenshots of the dealer code supposedly confirmed the turbo-charged Mazda3. Mazda had nothing to say about the report at the time, but the automaker went back to the Twitter archives when we first published the story to tell Roadshow: “Power comes to those who are waiting.”
The tweet contains a link to a YouTube video with some graphics and an engine numbered 7, 8 and 2020. This means that we will officially see the Mazda3 turbo debut on July 8th. The automaker did not return immediately. Ask the roadshow for a comment when asked for additional information.
A turbo charged option for those Mazda3 was a long awaited option from Mazda fans. In fact, Mazda3 program manager Kota Beppu told Autocar last year that he had heard such great support for such a model. The positive feedback is likely to have helped Mazda make the decision.
As for the engine itself, we’ll likely see Mazda’s well-known 2.5-liter turbo foursome, which makes 250 horsepower in the engine Mazda6, CX-5 and CX-9. If the automaker decides to keep the performance the same – please, Mazda – it’s easy to do with one Volkswagen Golf GTI, which is 228 hp at the moment. It cannot be true Mazdaspeed3, but it would definitely take a hit in the same spirit.
The only problem is that according to these dealer codes, the turbo engine is not offered with a manual transmission. Instead, it is only combined with an automatic and all-wheel drive. It should also be available for both the sedan and hatchback. We’ll have all the answers in less than two weeks.
