Marvel's What If continues production amid coronavirus pandemic

What if Steve Rogers Wasn’t Captain America? What if Captain America was a zombie? We could just find out Marvel’s What if …?, an upcoming cartoon series with alternative timelines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It is one of many new TV shows in the world Phase 4 of the MCUand comes exclusively to Disney Plus. Actors from the Marvel films will deliver voices for their respective characters in the new series.

“I usually split my day between my home studio and the Disney property for daily newspapers and reviews, but now we’re only doing it remotely,” said Stephan Franck, director of animation for the show Newsarama On Wednesday. “From what I hear across town, animation was able to keep the shows in production, with everyone working safely from home. A big compliment to the studios who quickly switched to remote work.”

Disney’s streaming service started on November 12th, making it a short feature focused on the new Marvel content from Disney Plus. The Expand the Universe feature touches on the upcoming Phase 4 shows and includes some what-if clips.

A Twitter user posted gifs of the content. New is a short appearance by T’Challa as Star-Lord.

There are also two short clips from the first episode: “What if Peggy Carter becomes Captain America?” One shows Peggy’s British shield, while the other wears the Howard Stark-designed Iron Man suit, which is controlled by a normal Steve Rogers. There’s also a brief glimpse of the Marvel Zombies episode, in which a zombified Captain America throws its shield at the winter soldier just to catch it just like it did in the movie.

When does what come out when?

What If is scheduled to appear on Disney Plus in the summer of 2021.

What is what if

The What-If Comic Book started in 1977. The series is hosted by Uata, a member of an advanced alien race called The Watchers, who watches alternative realities but does not interfere. The aliens appeared briefly in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1. 2 while Stan Lee’s cameo.

Each comic tells an alternate reality of a comic book plot. What if # 1 is a retelling of The Amazing Spider-Man # 1 in which Spider-Man tries to join the Fantastic Four? Instead of being rejected as in the original comic, he joined the group in the alternative reality version to make the Fantastic Five. Other what-if storylines include “what if Gwen Stacey survived,” “what if Wolverine joined SHIELD,” and “what if Venom owned the Punisher.”

Who is in What if?

Jeffery Wright will speak to Uata, the guardian of this universe. He will act as the narrator and guide for the series. Actors from the various Marvel films will repeat their roles for the animated versions of themselves, such as Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther).

A person who also returns is Robert Downey Jr. Downey will retire his role from Tony Stark. It is still unclear in which episode he will appear.

What storylines will there be in What if?

So far, two storylines are known. The first is “What if Peggy Carter becomes Captain America” or rather Captain Britain. In this alternate timeline, Peggy receives the Super Soldier Serum to become a British superhero. Steve Rogers, on the other hand, will wear a Howard Stark metal suit.

The second will be a version of a series that is a favorite among many comic book fans, Marvel Zombies, as a zombie Captain America confirms on D23.

Marvel Zombies, as the name suggests, is a horror comic in which heroes and bad guys in the Marvel universe are infected by a virus and turn them into zombies. The result is super zombies that travel the universe and alternate schedules to feed on the living.
