TL; DR
- Information about hardware and software features of the Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 6 Pro cameras has just been leaked.
- There seems to be good news and bad news regarding their photography and videography skills.
- Since it is a leak there is no way to determine if the information for the actual release of the phones lasted.
It has been for a few weeks XDA developer has communicated with an anonymous source who claims to have a working Google Pixel 6 Pro. By sharing information with XDA, this source gave us a glimpse of what we can expect from Google’s next flagship product.

Today gave the source XDA a tour of the Google Pixel 6 Pro camera. By examining the code from the phone and asking questions to the anonymous source, XDA collected some interesting tidbits about the imaging system.
Keep in mind that this is unaudited leaked information. Even though XDA is a very trustworthy source of such information, that is not to say that it is set in stone. Treat everything you read here with a grain of salt.
Camera hardware for Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro
As a refresher, what you can expect from the two phones in terms of hardware:
- 50MP Samsung GN1 main cable
- 12MP Sony IMX386 ultra wide angle
- 8MP selfie camera
Google Pixel 6 Pro
- 50MP Samsung GN1 main cable
- 12MP Sony IMX386 ultra wide angle
- 48MP Sony IMX586 telephoto lens with 4x zoom
- 12MP Sony IMX663 selfie camera
Note that the phones have different selfie camera hardware. Corresponding XDA, the Pixel 6 Pro code indicates that it has an ultra wide angle lens on the front, while the Vanilla Pixel 6 has a standard wide angle lens. This should allow the Google Pixel 6 Pro camera to take wider shots and add more background to your selfies.
Features and Limitations
Here’s a quick rundown of what XDA found. For full explanations of how these things were found out, be sure to read the entire original post.
- Video recording quality: It looks like the Pixel 6 series main camera lens can capture 4K video at 60 fps. However, the wide-angle and telephoto lenses get stuck at 4K at 30fps.
- Seamless recording: Setting all three lenses to 4K30 recording allows you to seamlessly switch from one lens to the other without stopping recording.
- Video zoom: The maximum zoom level for recordings with 4K60 or 1080p60 is supposedly 7x. Recording with 4K30 or 1080p30 supposedly allows zoom levels of up to 20x.
- Manual white balance: You may have more control over the white balance of your shots. However, it is unclear whether this is a developer role for the Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 6 Pro cameras.
- “Magic Eraser”: It is possible that Google has revived its plans to incorporate object deletion into its products. It said it would do this in Google Photos, but it never happened. Maybe this will be exclusive to Pixel 6?
- Facial blurring: In fact, Google has already confirmed this, but the Pixel 6 Pro code backs up the announcement. As the name suggests, this would help clean up blurry faces in your shots.
- Bluetooth microphone: It is possible that you can use a Bluetooth connected microphone while recording videos. However, the evidence for this is currently fragile.
There are several other implied features in the full abstract, but either the evidence for it is shaky or XDA not sure what they will be for.
