TL; DR
- More and more users around the world are finding their Google Pixel 3 phones bricked up.
- Most of the time, the phones enter EDL mode and get stuck there.
- It is possible that this is a hardware failure, but the real cause remains a mystery for now.
Google is no stranger to hardware problems on their phones. The Nexus 6P – which Google co-developed with Huawei – is one of the most notorious phones for post-sale issues that essentially bricked the device. Google eventually paid off on a class action lawsuit.
Essentially, users find the phones stuck in “Emergency Download Mode” also known as EDL mode. EDL mode is a type of recovery related to Qualcomm, which suggests that the problem may be related to the Qualcomm hardware in the phone. This could include the processor (the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845), the modem, or one of the other Qualcomm bits in the Pixel 3.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a way for people with a bricked Google Pixel 3 to get out of EDL mode. Restarting the phone doesn’t change anything. Technical methods normally reserved for flashing ROMs and the like do not work either. The phone just boots into EDL mode, stays there and that’s it.
To his credit, Google support folks have popped up on some of the support threads. However, they basically ask for logs and other diagnostics which of course cannot be obtained if the phones are trapped in EDL mode.
If you discovered that your Google Pixel 3 was bricked, let us know in the comments.
