Mail app on iPhone may be vulnerable to email hack, report says
The default mail app on Apple’s iPhones may be prone to sophisticated email hacksAccording to a report by the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday.
The previously unknown vulnerability, discovered by cyber security company ZecOps, has reportedly allowed hackers to install malicious software on an iPhone by sending a specially crafted email. In some versions of iOSAs the operating system of the iPhone, the hack can be triggered if the malicious email is downloaded from the mail app without the recipient having to take any further measures, the journal reported.
In a report released on Monday, ZecOps said that Vulnerability has existed since at least iOS 6. The company believes the exploit will be used to target targeted attacks in the wild.
However, a fix could be on the way soon. According to ZecOps, Apple has addressed the vulnerability in the latest version of its beta software.
Apple did not respond to a request for comment, but in one Statement to BloombergThe company said it had reviewed the reports and found that the vulnerabilities were not an immediate threat to users.
“The researcher identified three problems in Mail, but they alone are not enough to bypass iPhone and iPad security protection, and we have found no evidence that they have been used against customers,” Apple said in a statement, adding added that “these potential problems will be resolved in a software update soon.”
