Looking Glass’s next product is a holographic digital photo frame – TechCrunch
Looking Glass’ technology is extremely cool, but so far prohibitively expensive. It ranges from $ 600 for the 8.9-inch product to $ 6,000 for the 15-inch model – and an undisclosed amount for the 32-inch 8K display. Portrait may not be the most technically ambitious or versatile product the Brooklyn-based startup has made, but it’s easily the most accessible.
At $ 349, it’s still not cheap (though it is $ 199 if you get in early via Kickstarter), but it has to be one of the cheapest holographic displays on the market. In addition to pricing, the company is also taking a more populist approach to functionality, offering an essentially very advanced digital photo frame. The system offers up to 100 different perspectives on a 3D image which, in contrast to products like the new 3D display from Sony, can be viewed by several people at the same time.
The system can also be run without being tied to a computer. Standalone mode relies on a built-in computer to provide a holographic image at 60 FPS. These photos can be taken with an iPhone and converted into a 3D image using the supplied HoloPlay Studio software. Holographic videos can also be recorded with Azure Kinect and Intel RealSense cameras.
“It’s the first step towards holographic video calling,” the company notes, and may provide some guidance on future plans.
“Even as a small child, I dreamed of the moment when I could have my own holographic representation,” says CEO Shawn Frayne in the press release. “I imagined what it would be like to send someone a holographic birthday message or say hello to my great-great-great-granddaughter as a hologram. Looking Glass Portrait, the culmination of six years of work by our Brooklyn and Hong Kong-based team, is making those dreams come true for more people than ever before. “
The portrait launches today on Kickstarter and is available for early supporters for $ 199.
