TL; DR

  • A new regulatory filing seems to indicate that the Samsung Galaxy S22’s battery capacity will be much smaller this time around.
  • A picture showing the alleged battery shows that it could have a predicted capacity of just 3,700 mAh.
  • That’s a lot smaller than the 4,000 mAh battery on this year’s Galaxy S21.

In a submission to the South Korean certification body (via SamMobile) Samsung has uploaded an image of a battery with the model number EB-BS901ABY. The phone, which is the Galaxy S22, has a model number of SM-S901B. According to the picture of the battery, its nominal capacity is 3,590 mAh and its typical capacity is 3,700 mAh.

However you cut it, this seems to confirm that the standard Galaxy S22 has a battery that is at least 300 mAh less than the 4,000 mAh battery on the Galaxy S21. Why should Samsung shut down the battery? One possible explanation is that the S22’s supposed screen size is only 6.02 inches compared to the Galaxy S21’s 6.2-inch screen. SamMobile also says that the Galaxy S22 could have a Samsung Exynos 2200 processor inside, which may be more efficient in terms of power consumption compared to the Exynos 2100 tucked in the S21 in international markets.

That being said, reducing the battery by a full 300 mAh throws all sorts of speculations about the true battery life of the Galaxy S22 to the wind until we get our hands on one. In our own tests, we found that we could use the Galaxy S21 for over a day on a single charge. Depending on various factors, this may not be possible with the Galaxy S22. There is also no telling what the battery life will be like if the phone uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor for the US market.

The fact that Samsung may be cutting the battery on its next big flagship smartphone in a world where similar phones have batteries of 5,000mAh or more could make the Galaxy S22 a big disappointment in this very important hardware Make specification.
