LG Pay is shutting down in the US later this year
LG’s cellular division is almost entirely dead, and we are now seeing the remaining dominoes fall. The company has now announced the discontinuation of its mobile payment service LG Pay later this year.
LG in an email to. approved Android Authority that the payment service in the USA will be discontinued on November 1, 2021.
The company notes that it will soon “stop accepting new registrations with LG Pay; stop adding new cards to existing accounts (credit / debit / prepaid card, gift card, loyalty card); and no longer allow the purchase of new gift cards. ”However, users can continue to use the service with existing cards until the last day.
LG Pay US Shutdown: What It Means For Users
LG Pay is the company’s wireless payment service that uses LG’s NFC and Wireless Magnetic Communication (WMC) to mimick real cards. The latter enabled functions similar to Samsung Pay. While LG users in the US can still download another app like Google Pay, WMC technology is no longer available to them. This affects the owners of the LG G8x and LG V60.
When LG announced its withdrawal from the smartphone sector, it confirmed that it will continue to provide security updates for older phones. It seems that the maintenance of apps and services related to the smartphone business was not in its scope.
LG Pay recommends that users spend any remaining balance on LG Pay Perks Cards before the retirement date. Users should also write down the details of any gift cards stored on the service.
