LG gives us a real-world peek at upcoming rollable phone
- LG teased its rollable phone at its CES 2021 event.
- A video briefly shows the device’s screen retracting into the body.
CES 2021 has essentially started and LG hosted its own event as part of the all-digital conference. The company was showing televisions and household appliances, but had another exciting test on offer when it briefly demonstrated its rollable smartphone.
LG showed the rollable phone at the very end of the event, with the device held in landscape mode. We can clearly see the top of the screen retracting into the rest of the phone via what is believed to be a motorized mechanism as the screen changes from tablet size to smartphone form factor. Check out the clip below to get a better idea of what it looks like.
It seems like the LG rollable phone display expands from the right side when the phone is held in portrait orientation. This is reminiscent of the rollable Oppo X 2021 concept that also expands from the right.
LG also showed the rollable mechanism from a slightly different angle earlier in the press conference, which gives us a good idea of the size difference between smartphone and tablet mode. Check it out below.
This isn’t the first time LG has teased the rollable smartphone as the brand gave us a glimpse into the mechanism at the Wing launch event. In both cases, the next phone in the Explorer project seems to be getting closer and closer to release.
