Jeep Wrangler is first vehicle to tip over in small overlap crash test — twice

The redesigned Jeep Wrangler had a date with the Road Safety Insurance Institute last week and let’s just say it wasn’t going very well. According to the IIHS, the Wrangler is the first vehicle to tip over with small overlaps at the front during the driver’s crash test.

IIHS released its results after Thursday’s usual crash tests, and the driver’s crash test with small overlaps caused the Wrangler to tip over not just once but twice. The SUV hits the barrier at 40 miles per hour and simply turns to the side before it stops at the barriers. It is not a pretty sight.

According to the security agency funded by the insurance industry, it chose the 2019 Wrangler during a routine test program that runs the entity to test the automaker’s crash tests. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Jeep’s mother car maker, reported results showing that the SUV did not tip over during its own test.

After IIHS conducted its first test, which ended with the SUV tipping over, the FCA questioned the results, according to the security guard. The automaker said the results may be distorted due to the way the watchdog connected the rig of the crash propulsion system. The IIHS agreed to retest the Wrangler using another method that was approved by the FCA, but the Wrangler flipped over again.

FCA reports Roadshow in a statement: “FCA has produced more than 500,000 of these vehicles. We are not aware of any incidents from this population that correlate with the vehicle dynamic part of the IIHS test result. With more than 75 safety features available, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited meets or exceeds all federal security standards and continues to be recognized by news organizations and consumer groups. “

The poor performance in the crash test resulted in IIHS giving the Wrangler 2019-2020 a marginal rating in this particular crash test, a step above the worst rating, bad. The rollover accidents declared by the security body increase the likelihood that passengers will be partially ejected from the vehicle. While the Wrangler wasn’t completely overrun, it was still about IIHS as the Wrangler’s doors and roof are removable.
