Rediscover Google Pixel 4 xl revised

Many smartphones today come with news aggregators to the left of the device’s home screen that provide both weather and news updates. There are plenty of options between Google Discover, Samsung’s own news aggregators, and the OnePlus shelf.

So that surprised us Android Authority Readers’ favorite news aggregators in this regard or whether they used this feature in the first place. And it really is a two horse race when it comes to occupying the area to the left of your homescreen.

Are you using a news aggregator to the left of your home screen?

Results

At the time of writing, it had counted a total of 1,948 votes, and just under 50% of respondents chose Google Discover as their aggregator of choice on the far left of the screen. This doesn’t really come as a surprise as Google’s solution ships on a wide variety of phones around the world.

It was really a two-horse race, with 42.5% of readers surveyed saying they didn’t use a news aggregator on the far left screen. At least two comments indicated the presence of ads as a driving factor behind their decision.

Meanwhile, the third-party news aggregators, OnePlus Shelf, and Samsung’s own solution have bottomed out in that order, with none of them reaching 4% of the total votes.

Samgung’s solution is quite surprising as it is the most popular OEM and the news aggregators are generally pre-installed. We wonder if Samsung would be higher on the list if the average Android consumer tuned in as well (or if even tech-savvy folks didn’t care about their news aggregator).

Remarks

  • Wongwatt: One of the first things I turn off every time I get a new phone.
  • Amr Ahmad Muhammad Khedr: Funny thing I saw this article on Google Discover
  • Jumperone: One of the first things I did on my new Galaxy was turning this feature off.
  • Roberto Mezquia Jr: I literally found this article from the Google feed on my Pixel 5.
  • Walter Kowalski: I don’t like lavish features, so no
  • My Galaxy Prime: I turned it off on my S10
  • Joe Black: Never used on any device: -DI even turned it off when it was possible.
  • Saurabh Dhaul: It’s one of my favorite functions in Pixel. Those who have plagued my Samsung feed will never understand how good it is. Use google!
  • PhoenixWitti: Just adware, so no.
  • Jakub Kołakowski: I’ve been using Google Discovery / News for a very long time, but recently I saw 2 (or more?) Ads in the feed every time I visited … Just some random ads that weren’t even customized to match my profile. I turned it off 2 days ago so I’m basically back to the Feedly Only option.
  • jdrch: I read the news every day and I don’t need it with a spoon, so I disable the feature.
