TL; DR

  • Several large websites and services faced an internet outage today.
  • Steam, Disney, Amazon, LastPass, and many other well-known services have either completely down or have been taken up and down.
  • The Akamai content distribution network is believed to be the cause of the problem, but it has now been fixed.

If you tried to visit some of the greatest websites and services on the internet today and failed, you were not alone. Some of the biggest names in gaming, entertainment, shopping, and security went completely out of service while others went up and down unpredictably.

The internet outage was related to the Content Distribution Network (CDN) Akamai (via CNBC). The Service Issue Tracker for this company stated that there were issues with the Edge DNS service. This affected almost all of the company’s customers, including Steam, Disney, Amazon, PlayStation, UPS, LastPass, and even GoDaddy.

Akamai has addressed and resolved the problem so most services are now back online.

If you are still facing an internet outage, it is possible that something is wrong with you. The best troubleshooting step is to shut down and restart your system. If you continue to have problems, there may be something wrong with your modem or router.
