Intel announced details of its Thunderbolt 4 port and announced on Wednesday that it “advances the PC ecosystem with universal connectivity.” It comes six months later Intel first announced Thunderbolt 4 during CES 2020 in January. Intel now calls it “the most complete and future-proof version of USB-C”.

Like Thunderbolt 3, it can transmit data at 40 Gbit / s. However, it offers twice as many video and data requirements as Thunderbolt 3 – video support for two 4K displays or one 8K display, as well as PCI Express with 32 Gbit / s for memory speeds of up to 3,000 Mbit / s. And it’s USB4 compliant.

It is also compatible with previous generations of USB and Thunderbolt products. This means that connections to laptops and PCs are simplified and a Thunderbolt 4 port can replace multiple USB ports. The same applies to cables – a Thunderbolt 4 cable can replace several USB cables.

Intel’s next mobile PC processor, code-named Tiger Lake, will be the first to integrate Thunderbolt 4.

“Over a decade ago, Apple partnered with Intel to design and develop Thunderbolt. Today, our customers enjoy the speed and flexibility that any Mac offers,” said an Apple spokesman in an emailed statement. “We remain committed to Thunderbolt’s future and will support it on Macs with Apple silicon.”

Lenovo expects Thunderbolt 4 to increase productivity for PC users, said Jerry Paradise, vice president of Lenovo PC & Smart Devices’ commercial portfolio.

Intel now offers Thunderbolt 4 developer kits and certification tests. The Thunderbolt 4 Controller 8000 series will be available to computer and accessory manufacturers later this year. The first devices with Thunderbolt 4 ports are expected to be launched later this year, including Intel’s code name Project Athena laptops.

The Thunderbolt 4 port can replace many other ports.
