Updated September 25, 2019 (10:30 a.m. ET): It’s not just you! Instagram is currently unavailable for a lot of people. According to Down Detector, there has been a huge increase in Insta-related issues in the past 30 minutes.

Hopefully the site will be up and running again soon!

Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world, but when it doesn’t work it can be a frustrating experience. The servers are generally reliable, but in the unfortunate event that Instagram isn’t working, we’ve compiled a list of ways to fix it. Follow the troubleshooting guide below to resolve any issues with Instagram.

Instagram not working?

1. Check if Instagram is not available

If Instagram isn’t working for you, it might not work for anyone. Before taking any more drastic action, check to see if Instagram’s servers are down.

There are a number of websites that you can do this. However, we recommend Down Detector. Just check the Down Detector Instagram page and it will pop up No problems with Instagram, Possible problems with Instagram, or Problems with Instagram. You can also report issues that you need to share with other users.

If Instagram isn’t available, all you can do is wait. If it doesn’t, move down the list.

2. Restart the Instagram app

If Instagram’s servers are fine and it still doesn’t work for you, close the app and reopen it. On Android Pie, this is easy and only takes a few seconds. The exact steps may vary slightly depending on the smartphone you are using.

Here’s how to close and restart Instagram

  1. Tap the square bottom right.
  2. Wipe Instagram to close it.
  3. To open again Instagram.

Restarting the app can be a quick fix. However, if the problem is more severe, additional steps are required.

3. Update the Instagram app

Closing and reopening Instagram will fix most of the problems. But if it doesn’t verify you’re using the latest version of the app. Newer versions often contain bug fixes in addition to new features. Follow the steps below to check for Instagram updates.

How to update Instagram

  1. Open that Google Play Store.
  2. Open the menu by tapping Hamburger symbol top left.
  3. Tap My apps & games.
  4. Tap To update next to Instagram, if available.

4. Check your connection

If your Instagram feed isn’t loading or you can’t upload pictures, it might be because of your internet connection. In this case, if you are using a Wi-Fi connection, there are several things you need to take to resolve the problem. Try all of the items in the list below.

  • Turn off data and switch to Wi-Fi.
  • Get closer to your router
  • Reset the router even if your internet works on other devices.

If none of the above fixes do the trick, turn off Wi-Fi completely and see if Instagram is working. If it does, it’s time to buy a new router, but if it doesn’t, it’s time to move on to the next potential fix.

5. Restart your phone

As with many technical problems, the easiest and most effective solution is to restart the device. When Instagram doesn’t work, the same logic applies.

Reset your device and it can solve your Instagram problems right away. Just hold down the power button and tap restart. If that doesn’t work, move on to the next item in the list.

6. Uninstall and reinstall the Instagram app

Occasionally, while installing or updating Instagram, you may encounter an error that causes it to stop working. The only way to fix this is to uninstall and reinstall the app.

How to uninstall Instagram

  1. to open the settings.
  2. Tap Apps & notifications.
  3. Search and select Instagram.
  4. Tap Uninstall.

From there, find Instagram on the Google Play Store and reinstall it. The latest version will be installed automatically, but you may have to enter your login information again.

7. Review the list of known issues

If you’ve tried everything on the list and Instagram still doesn’t work, it may be a legitimate problem or an app bug. You can keep track of these on Instagram’s list of known issues.

Known problems can be fixed temporarily. So be sure to check the link above for the latest information.
