- The Indian smartphone market just hit a record high for the quarter, according to a Counterpoint report.
- The industry was spurred on by Samsung, Oppo and OnePlus.
- The OnePlus Nord is now the best-selling device in the upper mid-range segment.
Smartphone makers are unlikely to see 2020 as a good year for sales, but there are now signs of recovery in some regions and for some OEMs. According to research by Counterpoint, the Indian smartphone market rebounded and saw quarterly shipments in the third quarter of 2020.
In the third quarter of 2020, 53 million units were shipped in India, an increase of 9% over the previous year. However, this growth was not due to demand for flagships. The Rs 10,000-Rs 20,000 (~ $ 135-270) sector saw the highest growth and market share during the quarter.
Users who are willing to spend a little more also resort to a specific device. The OnePlus Nord is now the top-selling phone in the Rs 20,000 to 30,000 (~ $ 270 to $ 400) segment, according to the report. With the OnePlus 8, the company also consolidated its position as a top brand in the “affordable premium segment”.
Xiaomi versus Samsung in India
As far as the overall picture is concerned, two companies rule the quarter: Xiaomi and Samsung. Counterpoint suggests that Xiaomi lost its title as India’s best smartphone OEM in the third quarter of 2020. The company now owns 23% of the market compared to 26% year over year. Samsung is taking its place, jumping from a market share of 20% in the third quarter of 2019 to 24% in the third quarter of 2020. Overall, the Korean company in India saw a growth spurt of 32% year-on-year, while Xiaomi saw a growth spurt of 4%. Decline.
In particular, Canalys denies this claim. The latest research suggests that in the third quarter of 2020, Xiaomi will maintain its top position by a certain margin with a market share of 26%. Samsung is 6% behind.
Finally, according to Counterpoint, the other BBK companies also experienced general growth. Vivo grew 4% year over year and remained the third largest smartphone brand in India. Realme saw a 52% increase in the mid-range year over year, reportedly due to the Realme 6 and Realme 7 lines. Finally, Oppo saw deliveries in India grow 30% year over year, largely driven by demand for home appliances.
It’s unclear whether industry growth – and that of Samsung – will continue into the next quarter. Given that 2019 ended with tremendous growth for Chinese brands in India, it will be a challenge for the Korean company to maintain its top spot through 2021.
