Samsung’s attempt at creating a smart speaker didn’t work nearly three years later, but that doesn’t stop the company from exploring the category. MySmartPrice found a Samsung patent application for a smart display design that is unusually plausible.
The Samsung concept is similar to Lenovo’s Smart Display and encompasses the same basic concept as similar devices: you would use voice commands to control the device and get audiovisual feedback through the screen or speaker. The patent suggests you could turn the display on its side to get content in a vertical mode – a relative novelty in this category.

There is no guarantee that Samsung will ever ship such a smart display. Patents are explorations of ideas, not necessarily product roadmaps. The company first filed the patent with WIPO in August 2020 and was clearly in no rush to bring it to market.

The company has a knack for design and may have hardware or software features that help it stand out from the crowd. You can expect tight integration with Galaxy phones and other parts of the Samsung ecosystem.
And no, we wouldn’t rely on Samsung using Bixby. Samsung doesn’t rely as much on its much-criticized AI helper these days, and the company’s increasing collaboration with Google suggests it may use an assistant rather than an in-house solution. Currently, the Galaxy Home’s vaporware status makes standard voice technology more profitable. If Samsung can’t release a Bixby device in time with just audio, a smart screen is less likely.
