What do I know what you did about last summer?

I know what you did last summer is an adaptation of Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel of the same name. It’s also an adaptation of the 1997 teen slasher classic starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillipe.

The story is about a group of teenagers who accidentally run over a young man in their car on the way home from a party. Fearing what the event will do to their future, the four friends swear to keep it a secret and flee from the crime scene. But the following year they start receiving cryptic notes from someone who knows what they have done and chases them down one by one.

The 1997 film changes the identity of the murderer and makes the story follow more typical teenage slasher conventions than the novel, such as the murderer wearing a raincoat and killing his victims with a hook. This largely matched Hollywood’s newfound interest in slashers after the success of last year Scream. (I Know What You Did Last Summer was even written by Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson.)

The new I Know What You Did Last Summer Show

It is not clear how much the new series will hold onto the book or film as the main source material.

I Know What You Did Last Summer will revisit a familiar premise with a few twists and turns.

According to Amazon, “I Know What You Did Last Summer is a modern version of the 1997 horror film that honors the same creepy premise … A year after the fatal car crash that haunted their graduation night, a group of teenagers find themselves together and haunted by a dark secret.” from a brutal killer. As they try to find out who is after them, they reveal the dark side of their seemingly perfect city – and themselves. Everyone is hiding something and uncovering the wrong secret could be fatal. “

A new twist in the story will be the way in which the secret of the murderer who is hunting the teenagers is dealt with. “Each episode has a different perspective on what happened the night before the accident,” said showrunner Sara Goodman during Amazon’s Comic-Con @ Home panel. “[That] will make it a lot harder to find out who’s after them. “

How does the I Know What You Did Last Summer series fit into the film series?

I know what you did last summer of 1997

I Know What You Did Last Summer, released in 1997, has already spawned two sequels.

Just a year after the original was released, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer was released. In it, Julie, who survived the events of the first film, wins an all-inclusive trip to a resort in Brazil. But when she arrives, she quickly realizes that the resort is a trap. The killer is back and ready to finish what he started. The sequel wasn’t nearly as successful as the original, but nonetheless, another entry in the franchise was given the green light in 2006 (much later).

The direct-to-video I’ll Always Know What You Done Last Summer barely qualifies as a sequel. With an all-new cast, the film sees very different characters being chased by an addicted killer after they cover up an accidental death. The killer is the same, but this is effectively a remake of the previous film in a new setting.

A new approach

The new I Know What You Did Last Summer series is a franchise restart. According to official statements from Amazon, it should not take place in the same narrative universe as the previous films. Instead, it tells the same story in a new way.

“I’ve been laying little Easter eggs for these die-hard fans throughout the season,” said Sara Goodman, but the show exists on its own and doesn’t require any prior knowledge of the films.

Goodman also hinted that the series will try to break away from some slasher tropes. “The novel was in its time, and the film was very much in its time, and I wanted to do a show that was from that time. And so nobody is just an athlete. Nobody is just a smart girl. Nobody is just a bitch. People are really complex and everyone has different parts of themselves that they show different people at different times. They are much more diverse and complex, and I think the cast is very representative of these deeper, more layered characters. “
