Hyundai’s Remote Smart Parking Assistant – perhaps better known as “smaht pahk“- can help 2020 sonata Push in and out of tight spaces. But if there is a bug in the software, the car can just go on.
This is the reason for a new recall announced on Friday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regarding 11,870 Hyundai vehicles in the United States. The all-new 2020 Sonata sedan is the most affected vehicle, although the recall calls for the company’s low volume Nexo hydrogen fuel cell crossover, also.
“The Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) software may not be able to prevent vehicle movement if the RSPA system malfunctions,” NHTSA said in its official statement (PDF). “Unintentional vehicle movements increase the risk of accidents.”
The solution to this recall is fairly simple: Hyundai dealers simply reprogram the RSPA software for free. Recalls are expected to begin on June 4, and Hyundai said there were no known crashes or injuries related to the issue.
With remote parking technology, only the top-end Sonata Limited is available. Since the brand new 2020 model was only recently launched, the recall affects only a relatively small number of cars. RSPA is not available for gasoline electronics Sonata Hybrid.
