Huawei’s US sanctions will be reviewed under Biden’s Commerce pick

- President Joe Biden’s Commerce candidate announced that she would review the sanctions against Huawei.
- This suggests that the situation for Huawei may change under the new US administration.
Huawei was added to the U.S. entity list by the Trump administration back in May 2019, but President Joe Biden’s election as Secretary of Commerce has now shed light on what could happen under the new administration.
When asked if she would keep Huawei on the economic blacklist, Rhode Island governor and trade candidate Gina Raimondo replied (h / t: Reuters) That they would “review policies, consult with you, consult with industry, consult with our allies, and provide an assessment of what is best for America’s national and economic security”.
The answer suggests that the Biden administration is ready to remove Huawei from the entity list or make other changes in favor of the Chinese brand. Nevertheless, Raimondo still has to be confirmed as head of trade. It’s also worth noting that after reviewing the situation, the administration might ultimately choose to keep the status quo.

Huawei has been subject to US economic sanctions for nearly two years that seriously affect its ability to source, design, and manufacture smartphone components. Select US companies have been given the green light to continue dealing with Huawei, but Google has not been granted a license to do so. This means that current Huawei devices don’t offer any major Google integration.
Still, Raimondo has also pledged to protect US telecommunications networks from Chinese companies like Huawei and ZTE.
“I would use the toolkit available to me as much as possible to protect the Americans and our network from Chinese interference or any influence through the back door,” the candidate was quoted as saying.
