Huawei’s extremely curved display design is a surprise win

Curved smartphone screens are not for everyone. The design feature is beautiful to look at, but it also sacrifices some practicality. However, a new patent design from Huawei appears to address both issues.

The company’s latest filing describes a smartphone with a screen that covers both edges of the device. There are no buttons. Instead, it uses a pressure-sensitive system that allows users to control the volume, access other menus, or even read status information.

After the patent emerged, we wanted to assess the opinion of our readers about the device in a recent survey. Here are the results.

We received almost 3,000 votes in this poll, which is remarkable in view of Huawei’s displeasure and thus the public interest. However, the company can apparently still produce designs that will interest consumers. 65.8% of readers also admit that they “love” the patented design of Huawei’s curved display. Only 34.2% “hate” it.

Judging by the comments, those in the “Love it” warehouse appreciate Huawei’s reinterpretation of the design. Others find that they generally like curved displays. Those who question the design seem to feel that protecting the device would be difficult. Additionally, it would likely be more fragile as the display overlaps around the edges of the phone as well.

Either way, there have been a lot of comments both for and against radically curved displays on smartphones. Read some of these different opinions below.

• Mikko Saarinen: For me, the most important aspect of the side buttons is their feel. Know which key to press without looking at the phone. On the flip side, I rarely use a phone without a case, so a fully wrapped display in a case would be difficult, if not impossible.
• Drone9: At least they push the boundaries of things that need to be expanded. Unlike American companies pushing the boundaries of things to remove / weigh on consumers.
• MBII: Who says flat panel displays are a fan favorite? I loved the curved display on my Motorola Edge until Android 11 made it unusable.
• Teo Harves: How Would a Protective Phone Case Work? I always drop mine so I’m not convinced it would be for me.
• B. Niess: It’s a nightmare for developers, haptics, battery, stability and probably more. Still looks cool.
