- Huawei has introduced a redesigned MateBook X with a clever “thermal” hinge to keep it fanless.
- There’s also a Watch GT 2 Pro smartwatch that adds wireless charging and over 100 workout modes.
- FreeBuds Pro challenge Apple’s AirPods Pro.
Huawei kicks off its 2020 Developer Conference (HDC) with a flood of new hardware. The headliner is a MateBook X laptop that promises solid performance while remaining particularly quiet.
Huawei also unveiled a new version of its MateBook 14 laptop, the Watch GT 2 Pro smartwatch and FreeBuds Pro wireless earbuds. This is in addition to Watch Fit and Huawei FreeLace Pro, which were recently unveiled and unveiled at HDC 2020.
Huawei MateBook X and MateBook 14 (2020)
The heart of the redesigned laptop isn’t the thin 3K x 2K touchscreen. Rather, it is a “world’s first” thermal hinge that dissipates heat – despite the presence of a quad-core Core i7 from the U series, it is a fanless system. The magnesium aluminum alloy unibody also weighs a light 2.2 pounds. There are also glitzy new colors from Forest Green and Silver Frost to grab your attention.
You can also expect a 26% larger trackpad for the 2020 MateBook X, with a large NFC detection area to connect your Huawei phone to your laptop. You’ll also find a fingerprint reader, four speakers, and Wi-Fi 6 support. If there’s a weak spot, it’s the 42 Wh battery, which provides an estimated nine hours of video playback or office work and 7.5 hours of web browsing.
The MateBook X (2020) costs from 1,599 euros for the Core i5 variant and will be available from October.
The new MateBook 14 is a 14-inch system that revolves around an eight-core Ryzen 7 4800H chip that is cooled by a new “shark fin” fan that provides 39% more airflow, but still 40% is thinner. It shares a similarly enlarged trackpad with the MateBook X and has a 56 Wh battery that’s good for 10 hours of video or productivity, or 8.5 hours of surfing.
The MateBook 14 (2020) will go on sale next to the MateBook X (2020) in October. Prices start at € 849 for the R5 4600H variant.
Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro and FreeBuds Pro
The other new products announced by Huawei are more iterative but still welcome.
The Watch GT 2 Pro Smartwatch offers wireless charging that can be powered from any reverse charging Qi pad or phone. In addition to outdoor-capable functions such as a special assistant, data-free weather warnings and an offline route back function such as in the Honor Watch GS Pro, you will also find a more effective and energy-efficient heart rate sensor.
The GT 2 Pro watch costs € 329 for the sports version and € 349 for the classic model and will be available from September. Be sure to read our Watch GT 2 Pro review for more information.
Huawei has some answers to the latest trends in wireless earbuds too. The FreeBuds Pro are a clear antithesis to the AirPods Pro from Apple. They offer active noise cancellation that includes dynamic strengths (a first, Huawei claims) and modes for amplifying the outside world. The true wireless buds offer 11mm drivers and 30 hours of total playback between them and the mandatory battery compartment.
The FreeBuds Pro will be available from October at a price of € 199. You can read our FreeBuds Pro review at the link.
