You are probably wearing a fitness tracker that synchronizes its collected data with a specific service. If you’re a Fitbit user, this will sound true. Despite Google’s recent purchase of the company, keeping your Fitbit data in sync with Google Fit is a daunting task. However, it is not impossible.

While there’s no official support for syncing data between Fitbit and Google Fit, some nifty third-party apps make it possible. In this guide we explain how you can link the two services with these apps.

What you will need

First, you need a Fitbit tracker. Second, you’ll need to download Fitbit and Google Fit from the Play Store. Of course, if you’re already a Fitbit user, there’s a good chance you’ve already installed the former. After that, download Health Sync from the Play Store.

Health Sync offers users a one-week trial, after which they can either subscribe to the app or set up a one-time payment for a perpetual license. Still, the trial period is long enough to provide an adequate experience with the app.

How to sync Fitbit with Google Fit using Health Sync

Once installed, open Health Sync and follow the steps below to sync your Fitbit data with Google Fit.

  1. The first screen should have a box listing the first use actions. Tap OK.
  2. The app will now ask you to specify the synchronization direction between the services to be synchronized. The next two steps will ask you to choose a source app and a destination app. Read this, then tap OK.
  3. You can now choose your basic sync source. This is the source app that you want to sync with another app. In this case, tap Fitbit.
  4. You will now see a new screen where you can choose a target app. Tap Google Fit. After making your selection, tap OK.
  5. Next, you’ll need to give the app a consent form to sync the two services. Tap that letter of acceptance and read the document. If you agree, tap OK.
  6. If you haven’t already installed Google Fit, the app will prompt you to do so. It also describes any additional steps that you must take before you initialize a connection. This includes choosing a Google Account for Google Fit and allowing Health Sync to use your Fitbit account.
  7. Once the initialization is complete, Health Sync will allow you to choose which fields you want to sync by tapping the appropriate check boxes. This includes steps, activities, sleep, weight and diet, and water data. In particular, Fitbit cannot sync heart rate data with another app.
  8. The app asks for any additional permissions it may need. If you agree, follow the instructions.
  9. Finally, to check that everything is working, tap on that Sync status Button. If the exam returns an OK, sync data from Fitbit with Google Fit!

If you want to change the metrics to be synchronized, you can always return to Health Sync to fine-tune them. The app also recommends switching off automatic activity tracking within Google Fit, as this can disrupt the synchronization of data between Fitbit and Google Fit.

Alternative solution: FitToFit

FitToFit is another solution specially designed to sync Fitbit data with Google Fit. It cuts off the other service options offered by Health Sync, which may seem like a better solution to some.

Download FitToFit

The app is simpler, has a more attractive dark design, and is as simple as it gets. Allow app permissions to access Fitbit data, select your Google Fit account and select the data you want to transfer. Once done, you can choose the specific fields you want to sync including steps, activities and distance. Tap Transferring data if complete.

FitToFit also builds up the data discrepancies between Fitbit and Google Fit. Users can also turn off auto-sync or limit broadcasts to Wi-Fi if needed.

If Health Sync seems a little too complicated or you don’t want to look for a premium app, FitToFit is the ticket.
