How OnePlus thinks about top-tier displays

Eric Zeman / Android Authority

A good display is the key to almost every smartphone on the market. It is what you spend hours looking at it every day, after all, so if something is wrong you will be sure to notice it. Fortunately for all of us, OnePlus has kept the need for an excellent display close to our hearts since day one.

We’ve long raved about the crisp OLED displays and snappy refresh rates, but they’re just the tip of the iceberg. OnePlus manages to stay at the forefront of the smartphone display game with careful planning and a long track record. Let’s see how they got here.

Pushing the boundaries of new displays

For several years, smartphone OEMs doubted the need for high refresh rates. 90 Hz displays used to be considered overkill – oh, how times have changed. We quickly pointed out the impressive then new addition to the OnePlus 7 Pro and stated in one of our articles:

“The OnePlus 7 Pro has some premieres not just for OnePlus phones, but for the entire smartphone market in general. Aside from being the first phone to hit store shelves in the US with a pop-up selfie camera, it was the first commercially released phone with a 90Hz refresh rate on an OLED display.

It takes a lot to jump into a new, powerful display, but OnePlus didn’t stop there. The OnePlus 7 Pro also had the special honor of bringing a 1440p resolution to life. After all, there’s a good reason that all these years later, the OnePlus 7 Pro has been one of our authors’ most popular Android phones.

Excellent displays since day one

OnePlus didn’t just wake up and decided to push the boundaries of display technology with the OnePlus 7 Pro. In fact, it started at the very beginning with the OnePlus One. The OEM stepped out with a 5.5-inch Full HD display to show that they mean business.

When the OnePlus 6T rolled around, OnePlus was ready to change the game again with the first fingerprint reader in the display. It was the only model to offer this feature in 2018 and well into 2019 before Samsung’s Galaxy S10 series was launched.

The OnePlus 7 Pro also received an impressive A-Plus rating from DisplayMate, which is the highest given by the organization. While the 7 Pro brought 90 Hz to the world of smartphones, the OnePlus 8 Pro went even further with a 120 Hz panel. We must not forget that OnePlus is the first OEM to support Fortnite on mobile devices at a remarkable 90 frames per second.

That long history of impressive OnePlus displays has taken us to where we are today with the OnePlus 9 series. The OnePlus 9 Pro is a true killer flagship with its Fluid Display 2.0 technology that automatically adapts your frame rate to any number of different tasks. It also increases the resolution to Quad HD Plus to support the smooth 120Hz refresh rate.

We liked the display very much in our test, as did DisplayMate, which again gave it an A plus rating. The OnePlus 9 Pro scores with 1,300 nits of brightness and has more than 8,000 automatic brightness levels to ensure comfort in every situation.

It’s hard to deny that the OnePlus 9 Pro’s display is great for gaming – even if it wasn’t specifically designed for such a purpose. The impressive Hyper-Touch technology means that you can take advantage of sampling rates of 240 Hz and the synchronization speed of 360 Hz is up to six times faster than ever before.
