Modern smartphones are essentially pocket computers that provide enough power for many advanced computing tasks. Some OEMs take advantage of this by adding a dedicated desktop mode to their devices.

Samsung’s Dex mode is a better known example that allows tablets and smartphones to be projected onto larger displays. Huawei’s Easy Projection function and Motorola’s Ready For function enable similar functions with a handful of devices. Essentially, these modes turn smartphones into tiny computer towers.

However, desktop mode is not a substitute for a workstation or laptop. Users who regularly use Android apps can view them on a larger display. General tasks like word processing or photo editing are also a fair game. However, you may still need a mouse and keyboard. In some cases, a cable or two may also be required.

If you own a Samsung or Huawei device, you’ve likely played around with their respective desktop modes. But how often do you use it? Has it become a real part of your daily workflow? How do you use it when you are not using it on an external display?
