The smartphone industry is finally feeling the first shock waves from the merger of OnePlus and Oppo. Earlier this week, OnePlus’s Pete Lau admitted that in the future, the brand will use a new unified operating system that combines the features of Oxygen OS and Color OS. Other news about joining hardware development teams has landed as well.
In light of the latest developments, we asked our readers to consider their new perception of the merger. It turns out that many readers still see the deal the same way when it was first announced.
What do you think of the OnePlus / Oppo merger since it was first announced?
Results
In this poll, published on September 20, almost 3,500 votes were cast, the majority of which are still against the merger.
Despite the latest clarification, just under 62% of respondents say that they feared the news when it first came out, “and still do today”. Around 7.8% of the readers initially had high hopes, but are no longer looking forward to the fruits of the partnership. If you look at the first survey results, 49 percent of the readers were vehemently against the merger, almost 40 percent against it. The latest survey results suggest that more ambiguous users are now firmly in the pessimist camp.

However, despite the overwhelming negative trend, some readers still view the merger as positive. 18.8% “looked forward” to the merger when it was first announced and still have that glowing perception. Remarkably, just under 12% of those surveyed admit that they prefer to move after they originally feared it.
Of course, we haven’t seen the results of the Oppo and OnePlus merger in terms of hardware. There are many signs that major changes are coming in 2022, but we have yet to see how these will affect the brands’ devices.
Your comments
- Needa: OnePlus has slowly lost me as a customer over the past few years. While I still absolutely love my op5, I won’t be buying another OnePlus phone as the update standards are falling off a cliff. Perhaps that will be fixed by the merger with OPPO. Anyway, I think it’s too late. I’m no longer excited or interested in OnePlus news.
- Joe Black: They’re all part of the BBK, so who cares if they merge two sub-brands.
- Large_Hadron: It has always been a bit hard to accept OnePlus’ claims that they were not a subsidiary of Oppo, especially given the fact that they did fall back on Oppo’s hardware. So I see this more as a BBK saving than a real merger.
- Skiarterking: My last OnePlus is the 5t which I think was the last good device they put on the market before they took a mainstream approach. However, since it is one of the last few companies to make easy rooting possible, I was ready to try again, but reading this my only fear is that Oppo will prohibit unlocking and rooting the bootloader.
- Byorself: How about another poll option like a shrug, which means I don’t care. One Plus lost me as a regular customer.
That’s it for this poll. Thank you for your votes and comments. If you have any other thoughts on the OnePlus / Oppo merger or the results of this survey, please leave a comment below.
