Here’s how you feel about public dessert names for Android
Google hasn’t used dessert names for new versions of Android in a few years and has opted for numbered versions starting with Android 10. But the company still uses dessert names internally, with Android 12 being referred to as Snow Cone.
Last week’s news suggested that Android 13 is being named Tiramisu on Google, but we wanted to see if readers would like publicly available dessert names to make a comeback. This is how you voted in this poll.

Results
The poll was released on July 27th and over 3,500 votes were counted at the time of writing. The winner here is the “yes” camp, which gets just over 86% of the vote or over 3,100 nods. It’s also easy to see why, as the dessert names were a departure from the Windows and iOS naming conventions.
Public dessert names have also been around since the inception of Android, which dates back to Android 1.5 Cupcake. So we can understand the longing for a continuation of this convention. In addition, Google still uses dessert names internally, so the search giant doesn’t have to find dessert names for its latest Android versions afterwards.
Still, just over 13% of readers surveyed say they don’t want dessert names to come back in public. A few comments suggest that the current numbering system is “cleaner” or suggest that Google is growing up. One reader also suggests that while Google should stick to code names, they should choose something other than desserts.
Remarks
- adibuyono: Somehow I miss Android with desserts names. It makes Android unique and of course cute ~
- CR45H 0V3RR1D3: There was a time when I thought she was cute. Nowadays, from many perspectives, it just seems cleaner to just use one number.
- Brian Bergström: I still call them by their dessert names. All because in parts of the world pie is a hearty dish, not a dessert.
- Cysper: Well, actually no, but they should stick with code names to make it more unique than iOS, but they should use something other than candy these days to make it feel fresh.
What about places? like Memphis, Chicago or Nevada. Or what about other cities in other countries? You should stick to code names instead of just calling them numbers.
