OnePlus released its first set of true wireless earbuds known as the OnePlus Buds earlier this year. While we gave them high marks for sound quality and value, we were pretty upset that there wasn’t a way to update OnePlus Buds without a current OnePlus phone.

In short, without a OnePlus 6 or newer branded phone, you wouldn’t be able to provide firmware updates for any of the true OnePlus wireless earbuds. Even the OnePlus 5T can’t push firmware updates to the headphones, let alone a phone that wasn’t made by OnePlus.

Fortunately, the company is finally correcting this stupid decision. The solution is far too complicated, but at least anyone who wants to get the most out of their OnePlus Buds or OnePlus Buds Z no longer needs to own a OnePlus phone!

How to update OnePlus Buds and Buds Z.

  1. If you have a OnePlus 6 or a OnePlus phone that started afterwards, you can simply download the OnePlus Buds app from the Google Play Store. Chances are it’s already on your phone anyway. Continue with step 3.
  2. If you have an older OnePlus phone or a different brand phone, you’ll need to download the HeyMelody app from the Google Play Store. This is an official app from OnePlus. It may not work on every phone, but it will work on some. Go to step 4.
  3. Open the OnePlus Buds app and go to the Settings section. Make sure that you have activated the Update firmware automatically setting. This will ensure that your buds are always up to date automatically.
  4. Open the HeyMelody app and let it connect to your buds. If a firmware update is available, tap it and then tap the Update button. Follow the instructions to update your OnePlus Buds.

Keeping your earbuds updated with the latest firmware will help you get the most out of them. Firmware updates may improve sound quality, improve battery life, and fix errors. In general, it’s always a good idea to update to the latest firmware whenever possible.
